Grazing Oklahoma – Johnsongrass

Characteristics: Johnsongrass is an introduced, warm-season perennial grass with scaly rhizomes. Mature height is about 3 to 7 feet tall. The leaves are flat with a pronounced white midrib, are up to 3/4-inch wide and up to 24 inches long. They have a bright green color during the growing season. The leaves will narrow toward the base and the tips will droop. The leaves and stems are usually speckled with purple blotches. The seedhead is 6 to 12 inches in length and has a pyramidal shape. The seeds are dark brown to black at maturity.
